16-year-old arrested; deliberate capturing with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass faculty shooting that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive College, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department mentioned in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging gadget supplies and threatening to commit against the law which is able to lead to demise or nice bodily harm.

Police said they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a scholar at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they found elements to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and electronic gadgets that may very well be used to create extra weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"School safety remains a high precedence for the division," police stated in a press release. 

Particulars on whom the teen was attempting to recruit weren't disclosed. Police said this case stays below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the school's group that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon components, the district relied on police expertise to assess any potential ongoing risk to its schools. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and safety employees about this investigation and, as is our standard follow, maintained close contact with our BPD School Resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive College campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation period, we were assured that this individual did not pose a direct threat to the Berkeley High Faculty group."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary motion towards the student.
