16-year-old arrested; deliberate capturing with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass faculty taking pictures that might have included a bombing at Berkeley High School, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department said in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful machine supplies and threatening to commit against the law which is able to result in death or great bodily injury.

Police stated they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a capturing that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teenager was a pupil at Berkeley High College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they found components to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and digital gadgets that might be used to create additional weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"Faculty safety stays a excessive priority for the department," police stated in a statement. 

Details on whom the teenager was making an attempt to recruit were not disclosed. Police stated this case stays under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the school's neighborhood that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon elements, the district relied on police experience to evaluate any potential ongoing threat to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the coed's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and safety employees about this investigation and, as is our standard practice, maintained shut contact with our BPD School Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley High School campus," Stephens wrote.
