16-year-old arrested; planned capturing with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass college capturing that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division mentioned in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful device supplies and threatening to commit a criminal offense which can result in death or great bodily injury.

Police said they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teenager was a student at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they discovered elements to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and electronic objects that might be used to create additional weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"School security remains a excessive precedence for the division," police said in an announcement. 

Particulars on whom the teen was attempting to recruit were not disclosed. Police said this case stays below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens informed the college's group that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon components, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing threat to its schools. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this period, we alerted our administrative and security staff about this investigation and, as is our commonplace observe, maintained shut contact with our BPD Faculty Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley High College campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we were assured that this individual didn't pose an instantaneous threat to the Berkeley Excessive School group."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary action against the scholar. 

In addition, a city hall meeting titled: 'How you can Talk to Kids About Faculty Violence' offered by Alameda County Office of Training is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
