New York City's final bank of public payphones was removed from a road corner in Midtown.

NEW YORK - The final New York City public pay telephone was removed on Monday morning. 

The bank of two phones was on 7th Avenue and 50th Street in Midtown Manhattan. And, as you may expect in Manhattan, graffiti was scrawled on it. 

The town began removing payphones in 2015 and replacing them with public Wi-Fi hotspots.

The removing marks the top of the payphone era in the metropolis except for some non-public payphones on public property and 4 permanent full-length so-called Superman cubicles.

LinkNYC, which runs the Wi-Fi hotspots, says the network shall be expanded to add 5G performance this summer season.

Along with free Wi-Fi, LinksNYC gives entry to a social services directory, system charging, free telephone calls inside the U.S., and transit and climate alerts.

Last NYC public payphones removed
