Guardian with hid weapon unintentionally shoots self while at Arlington ISD school, police say

Arlington police mentioned Duff Elementary Faculty was positioned on lockdown for a time Thursday after a parent with a hid weapon had his gun unintentionally go off, hitting the dad or mum in the leg.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police stated Duff Elementary Faculty was positioned on lockdown for a time Thursday after a parent with a concealed weapon had his gun by chance go off, hitting the mum or dad in the leg.

The varsity had early release and students had been released on the deliberate time of 12:10 p.m.

In accordance with police, the guardian, recognized as 55-year-old Anthony White, dropped his gun and accidentally shot himself. His damage was not severe.

The varsity district mentioned White was inside the constructing, close to the lobby area, and never within the hallway close to college students when the gun went off.

Police and school officers said there was no menace made and the father or mother did not have "malicious intent."

No college students or staff have been injured. The father or mother was taken to an area hospital after being shot in the leg. 

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones said after White was released from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in prohibited locations and discharge of a firearm in sure municipalities.

Within the two days for the reason that Uvalde mass faculty shooting, there have been five circumstances in North Texas related to weapons introduced to colleges or threats made.

Arlington dad and mom stated their minds instantly thought of the worst after they had been notified.

No guardian ever wants there to be a reason for them to get a text message saying their child's school is on lockdown.

However since this week's deadly shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, they cannot assist however suppose the worst once they do.

"Once I received the textual content message, I was like, ‘Oh my God, something goes to occur.’ I was shocked," father or mother Karima Rasheed said.

Whereas most instances, lockdowns are only drills college students have to participate in, Rasheed's son, Rami, said that understanding what happened earlier this week made this lockdown completely different. 

"I started seeing my classmates starting to cry and our trainer received a notification on their phone saying someone was in the building," he said.

Weapons usually are not allowed on school property, and oldsters FOX 4 spoke with said even if it was a mistake, the timing is just terrible.

"What are we going to do? They need to go to school, and obviously, statistically, it is unlikely to happen, but you by no means wish to be the one statistic. What if it is your children?" Matthew Mitchell said.

Mitchell lives throughout the street from Duff Elementary. His daughters go to a different Arlington faculty. 

"I’m terrified, absolutely terrified. I’ve got twin six-year-olds that go to a different Arlington school and each time I hear there is a lockdown or a college shooting, my coronary heart jumps into my throat," he stated.

Rasheed said Thursday was the commencement day for 6th grade students at Duff Elementary.

Whereas driving her son to high school in the morning, she had a talk with him about Uvalde and what to do if something ever happened at his college.

"If something occurred, you’ve got to run wherever that’s protected and hide," she told her child.

While some say the incident in Uvalde is simply too recent to speak politics, Mitchell mentioned one thing needs to be executed now. 

"They need to speak about it, they wish to marketing campaign on it, they need to fundraiser on it, but they don’t wish to actually pass any laws and do something," he added.
