Deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon surged to document levels for the month of April, almost doubling the area of forest eliminated in that month final year – the earlier April report – preliminary government data has proven, alarming environmental campaigners.

In the first 29 days of April, deforestation within the region totalled 1,012.5 sq. km (390 square miles), based on information from nationwide space research agency Inpe on Friday.
