A California district lawyer declined to file expenses Tuesday towards former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson after he was recorded on video in a physical altercation with another passenger on a JetBlue flight.
San Mateo County District Lawyer Steve Wagstaffe made the decision after having reviewed police experiences and movies of the April 20 incident. Each the passenger, who has not been identified, and Tyson requested that no prices be filed.
"Yesterday afternoon the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office concluded its evaluation of the case involving Mike Tyson on the San Francisco Airport on April 20, 2022 and the allegation that he dedicated a misdemeanor battery towards one other passenger on an airplane whereas waiting at the terminal prior to departure," Wagstaffe stated in a statement.
"Our determination is that we are going to not file any expenses towards Mr. Tyson based on the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. These include the conduct of the sufferer leading up to the incident, the interplay between Mr. Tyson and the sufferer, in addition to the requests of both the sufferer and Mr. Tyson that no charges be filed in this case," Wagstaffe stated.
The case is now closed.
Cellphone video showed Tyson, 55, appearing to try to punch somebody who was pushing him away. Representatives for Tyson said the particular person was harassing Tyson. The video didn't show what occurred before the altercation.
David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld and Martin Sabelli, attorneys for Tyson, responded to the decision to not file expenses by thanking Wagstaffe, the San Mateo County sheriff and legislation enforcement companies "for their cautious, diligent, and professional work."
