Gary Martin, a senior at Archbishop Wooden Excessive Faculty Warminster, Penn., broke a prestigious track and field report on the Pennsylvania Catholic League Championship on Monday by operating a mile in below 4 minutes. Martin's run broke a document that had stood for nearly 60 years.
Martin ran a mile in 3:57:98 with out the aid of a pacer, breaking a document that had been set by Jim Ryun in 1965.
Ryun became the first excessive schooler to run a mile in under four minutes in 1964, then broke his personal file 5 instances before graduating. Ryun's time of file was 3:58.3, a mark which Martin broke by lower than a second.
Martin is now the 14th American high school athlete to break four minutes, and his time now ranks third all-time in outside runs. It must be noted, although, that Ryun was the only athlete to do so in high school-only competitors, with out the usage of a pacer.
Martin's run was a serious milestone he prepares to attend the College of Virginia upon commencement. Talking about his long-term targets, Martin hopes to grow to be an Olympic athlete.
"I'd like to suppose that it is not crazy for me to say that it's a dream now," Martin instructed CBS Information. "Clearly, I'm still a protracted ways away and have some work to do, however I am assured in my capability. I have the dream, now I just should put the work in and chase it."
Based on his beating Ryun's mark, Martin's dreams may very well be in reach. After his report run in the Nineteen Sixties, Ryun went on to compete in three Olympic finals, successful silver in 1500m through the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
