Mum or dad with hid weapon by chance shoots self whereas at Arlington ISD faculty, police say

Arlington police mentioned Duff Elementary Faculty was positioned on lockdown for a time Thursday after a dad or mum with a concealed weapon had his gun accidentally go off, hitting the dad or mum in the leg.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police mentioned Duff Elementary College was positioned on lockdown for a time Thursday after a father or mother with a concealed weapon had his gun by chance go off, hitting the guardian within the leg.

The school had early launch and college students had been launched on the deliberate time of 12:10 p.m.

In line with police, the father or mother, recognized as 55-year-old Anthony White, dropped his gun and accidentally shot himself. His damage was not critical.

The college district stated White was inside the building, close to the lobby area, and not in the hallway close to students when the gun went off.

Police and college officials mentioned there was no risk made and the guardian didn't have "malicious intent."

No college students or workers have been injured. The guardian was taken to an area hospital after being shot within the leg. 

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones stated after White was released from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in prohibited locations and discharge of a firearm in certain municipalities.

Within the two days because the Uvalde mass faculty capturing, there have been 5 instances in North Texas related to guns brought to schools or threats made.

Arlington parents said their minds immediately thought of the worst after they have been notified.

No guardian ever desires there to be a motive for them to get a textual content message saying their kid's school is on lockdown.

However since this week's lethal shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, they cannot assist but think the worst once they do.

"Once I acquired the textual content message, I used to be like, ‘Oh my God, something goes to occur.’ I was shocked," mum or dad Karima Rasheed stated.

While most instances, lockdowns are solely drills college students have to take part in, Rasheed's son, Rami, stated that understanding what happened earlier this week made this lockdown completely different. 

"I started seeing my classmates starting to cry and our teacher received a notification on their phone saying someone was within the building," he said.

Guns will not be allowed on college property, and oldsters FOX 4 spoke with stated even when it was a mistake, the timing is simply terrible.

"What are we going to do? They should go to high school, and clearly, statistically, it's unlikely to happen, but you by no means wish to be the one statistic. What if it is your kids?" Matthew Mitchell stated.

Mitchell lives throughout the road from Duff Elementary. His daughters go to a different Arlington college. 

"I’m terrified, completely terrified. I’ve obtained twin six-year-olds that go to a different Arlington faculty and every time I hear there is a lockdown or a college capturing, my heart jumps into my throat," he mentioned.

Rasheed mentioned Thursday was the graduation day for sixth grade students at Duff Elementary.

Whereas driving her son to highschool within the morning, she had a chat with him about Uvalde and what to do if something ever happened at his college.

"If something happened, you’ve acquired to run wherever that’s secure and hide," she informed her child.

While some say the incident in Uvalde is too fresh to talk politics, Mitchell stated something needs to be achieved now. 

"They want to talk about it, they wish to campaign on it, they want to fundraiser on it, however they don’t want to actually cross any legal guidelines and do something," he added.
