16-year-old arrested; planned capturing with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass school capturing that might have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division stated in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful device materials and threatening to commit against the law which can lead to demise or great bodily damage.

Police stated they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teen was a pupil at Berkeley Excessive School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they discovered parts to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital objects that could possibly be used to create extra weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"School safety stays a high priority for the department," police said in an announcement. 

Particulars on whom the teen was making an attempt to recruit were not disclosed. Police stated this case stays under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the varsity's neighborhood that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon elements, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing risk to its schools. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and safety workers about this investigation and, as is our standard practice, maintained shut contact with our BPD Faculty Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley High Faculty campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation period, we were assured that this particular person didn't pose an instantaneous threat to the Berkeley High Faculty group."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary action in opposition to the scholar.
