16-year-old arrested; deliberate taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass school capturing that would have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division said in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no faculty that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive machine supplies and threatening to commit a crime which is able to result in demise or nice bodily harm.

Police stated they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teenager was a scholar at Berkeley Excessive Faculty.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they discovered components to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and electronic objects that could possibly be used to create further weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"College security remains a high priority for the department," police said in an announcement. 

Details on whom the teen was trying to recruit were not disclosed. Police said this case remains below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens advised the varsity's community that the district was in close contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon components, the district relied on police experience to assess any potential ongoing risk to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and safety workers about this investigation and, as is our commonplace observe, maintained close contact with our BPD College Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley High School campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation period, we were assured that this individual didn't pose an immediate risk to the Berkeley High Faculty group."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary motion towards the coed. 

In addition, a city hall meeting titled: 'Learn how to Discuss to Children About College Violence' offered by Alameda County Workplace of Education is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
