16-year-old arrested; planned taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass college taking pictures that might have included a bombing at Berkeley High Faculty, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department mentioned in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging machine materials and threatening to commit a crime which is able to lead to dying or great bodily damage.

Police stated they received a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a student at Berkeley High School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they found parts to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and digital gadgets that could be used to create extra weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"College security remains a high precedence for the division," police said in a press release. 

Details on whom the teenager was attempting to recruit weren't disclosed. Police mentioned this case stays under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the varsity's neighborhood that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police expertise to assess any potential ongoing risk to its colleges. The district communicated with police on the coed's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this era, we alerted our administrative and security employees about this investigation and, as is our commonplace apply, maintained shut contact with our BPD School Resource Officer on the Berkeley High College campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation period, we have been assured that this particular person did not pose a direct menace to the Berkeley Excessive School neighborhood."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary action against the scholar. 

In addition, a town hall meeting titled: 'Methods to Discuss to Youngsters About School Violence' provided by Alameda County Workplace of Training is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
