Um vorteilhaftere und relevantere Testergebnisse in Suchergebnissen zu erhalten, musste ich sich die Betreiber der Suchmaschinen an diese Ereignisse einstellen. Weil der Triumph einer Anlaufstelle davon abhängig ist, wichtige Suchergebnisse zu den inszenierten Suchbegriffen anzuzeigen, vermochten unangebrachte Testergebnisse dazu führen, dass sich die Benützer nach weiteren Chancen bei der Suche im Web umsehen. Die Lösung der Search Engines fortbestand in komplexeren Algorithmen für das Positionierung, die Merkmalen beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur nicht leicht manipulierbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin entworfenen mit „Backrub“ – dem Stammvater von Yahoo – eine Search Engine, die auf einem mathematischen Routine basierte, der anhand der Verlinkungsstruktur Internetseiten gewichtete und dies in den Rankingalgorithmus eingehen ließ.
